Word from the Mission Field

“Don’t overlook the crumbs…”

Today, many of the larger ministries are concentrating on big things, as they should. They have big ministries and their needs are great. However, we never overlook the importance of the “crumbs,” or the small things. “Small things” done in a big way are very important to Jesus. I have read two stories in the Bible about “crumbs.” Of course, we all know the story of the rich man and Lazarus, found in Luke 16:21. I took notice that the poor man, Lazarus, did not ask for a piece of bread, as you would have thought… Maybe he thought that he was not worthy of an entire piece of bread, or maybe he knew the rich man would not give up an entire piece of bread, so he humbly asked for the “crumbs…” What a touching story.

But as I was reading Matthew 15:22, I saw another story about crumbs… A Canaanite woman (Gentile) came to Jesus to ask Him to heal her daughter who was tormented by an evil spirit. She begs Him, but He “answered her not a word.” (Matthew 15:23) His disciples try to get her to leave, but she won’t go… Jesus says, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24) She worships Jesus and asks again, and He responds, “… It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to the dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. (There are those crumbs again!) Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was [healed] …” (Matthew 15:26-28)

We still have another story, not about bread crumbs, but about the widow’s mite (money crumbs)… She had cast in just two mites (less than two cents) into the offering, even though the rich had cast in tons of money. Jesus saw her “breadcrumbs” and said, “… this poor widow hath cast in more than they all…” (Luke 21:3)

Remember that God loves “small things.”

“For who hath despised the day of small things?” Zechariah 4:10

Today, if you have little, don’t despise the “breadcrumbs.” Give what you have, and God will bless it, whether it be money, time, talent, or anything you have!
