“Nanpwen maladi ki pa gen remèd.”
There is no illness that does not have a cure.
Our Medical Administrator, Barbara MacMannis, works hard running the Jesus Healing Center every day. She recently gave us an update on the Jesus Healing Center and I wanted to share that with you in my journal. Below is a report from Barbara.
A report from Barbara MacMannis
During the first quarter of 2015, the Jesus Healing Center reached out to Haiti’s poor in more ways than I could have imagined. The clinic is known throughout the region for offering the most professional medical care in our area and beyond. Many travel for hours in the dark to reach the clinic early in order to be seen by our nurturing medical staff.
We were amazed how far we were able to extend our hand of hope. We are continuously visited by people who have heard the stories of others we have helped in the past, and even from the voice of the Lord. Please take time to read about a few of the people we recently cared for at the Jesus Healing Center.
“I cried out unto the Lord with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill.”
Psalm 3:4
Meet Marceline
It was early one Friday morning, and the security guard brought Marceline to my office. He did not know what to do with her because she had come to the clinic, but had no complaints of illness. She told me, “I woke up this morning, and I was cold and hungry, and my children are all sick. My husband is dead, and I have sold everything that I owned. I sold our plates, cups, spoons and clothes to feed my children. I didn’t know what to do so I prayed to God, and he told me to come to this place today.”
We were able to give her hope by telling her that she could bring her children to the Jesus Healing Center for free medical care and vitamins. We also registered her children in our malnutrition program, which requires the family to come each week for examinations and food supplies. We prayed together, and she left that day feeling filled with a new and tangible hope.
Every day as I watch the streams of people arriving at the clinic, and the faces of patients as they wait to see the doctor, I imagine what it would be like to live the lives that these Haitians do. Most of the poor Haitians do not know where their next meal will come from or even if a meal will come. It is so frightening for these sweet people to be ill or have a loved one suffering and not have a source for help. Many Haitians are helpless as they watch a child lie lifeless with a high fever and they are only able to offer a tepid bath.
These are the times that we realize the importance of the Jesus Healing Center and how this medical facility allows Haitians to survive many illnesses that surround their daily lives because of unclean water, sanitation problems and poor diets.
“Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing; for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.” Psalm 59:17
Meet Achile and her mother Isoimene
Isoimene arrived at the clinic carrying her child who looked to be about ten-years-old. Achile was so sick that she could not even walk. She was so thin and frail that we immediately sent her to our emergency room.
After interviewing this distraught mother, we found out that Achile was actually fourteen-years-old and suffering from Juvenile Diabetes, which means she needs insulin to survive. The mother lived way up in the mountains and it had taken her over three hours to get to the clinic via several different tap taps (public transportation). The mother was exhausted from carrying and holding her daughter during the long journey. Achile was almost unresponsive and had a blood sugar level of over 400 (normal is between 80–120).
Her mother said, “I have nowhere else to go, I have been to every clinic in the area and no one can help us. Please take my daughter for your own.”
I was disturbed that the mother would say such a thing, but then I realized that she thought that if I took Achile as my own daughter, I would be able to help her. The mother had lost hope. We started an intravenous feeding to revive her, gave her insulin and sent for some food. She was sitting up and smiling within about an hour. She left the clinic weak, but able to walk with help from her mother.
Since that first visit to the Jesus Healing Center, Achile has returned for weekly check-ups and each time we have seen improvement. Her mother smiles as she realizes that her prayers have been answered.
This was only the beginning. How can we sustain someone who lives so far away and needs medication that requires refrigeration? We decided if we used chemical cold packs combined with cool mountain water that the insulin should last for about a month.
By her third visit to the clinic, the difference was like night and day. She walked in as a confident young lady, and the smile on her mother’s face said it all.
The Jesus Healing Center is able to do these things and sustain chronically ill patients because of Joyce Meyer Ministries–Hand of Hope. The hand of hope that we provide these patients is the unsung hero of the Jesus Healing Center every day. As Haitians are served, and medical care provided, those same people give glory to the Lord. I can’t count all the times that patients raise their hands and say, “Thank you Jesus!” It is our answered prayer that praise is given to the Lord.
The support from Joyce Meyer Ministries – Hand of Hope is more than just medical care; it enables us to establish monthly clinics for expectant mothers. It allows us to have weekly clinics for nutrition education that helps to combat the malnutrition that continues to plague the nation.
We are able to provide staffing for daily vaccination clinics in the region. Many contagious and life threatening diseases are much easier to control with the right care. Many would suffer the painful death of Tetanus if it were not for the availability of the community to receive vaccinations through the Jesus Healing Center.
The Jesus Healing Center has been the host for emergency vaccination clinics when Diphtheria was threatening our area. We worked hand and hand with the local health agency to put down the threat of yet another highly contagious and painful disease.
The Jesus Healing Center has hosted various dental teams not only to assist with dental health, but also to teach dental hygiene. The people of Haiti suffer from many diseases, which stem from poor dental hygiene and a lack of, or unaffordable dental help. The Jesus Healing Center has a dental unit and is able to host various dental teams, consisting of dentist and hygienist, several times a year.
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8
Our Jesus Healing Center is a model for other clinics starting up in Haiti. We provide top-notch medical care to the poorest of the poor in Haiti because of the generous monthly support of Joyce Meyer Ministries–Hand of Hope. We know without this support the Jesus Healing Center would not be here to be the light for the poor. We reach out to the poor in the name of Jesus, and give them the best care we can and in doing so we give hope. The Jesus Healing Center is deep and strong throughout the surrounding community. Patients know by our name that we are focused on the love of Jesus, the mercy of Jesus and the actions of Jesus. The patients know in their hearts that we do all we possibly can to help them.
We know the importance of helping our patients know Jesus, “The Great Physician” and Savior, before they ever see the doctors. We also know the importance of our staff being completely focused on Jesus. While the patients sing and pray in the waiting area, our staff meets in the emergency room and prays for them, and for ourselves. We all know that we need the Lord’s strength in order to do the actions we are called to do.
Thank you Joyce Meyer Ministries-Hand of Hope for allowing us to partner with you to serve the poor and witness the mercy of Jesus Christ. In January 2015 at the Jesus Healing Center, 2,055 patients received consultations and in February 2015, we received 1,506 patients in the clinic. The Jesus Healing Center reaches out to care for the whole family through consultations, community health and our well-planned referral system for those who need extended care.
Every morning as I make my way to the Jesus Healing Center, I thank God for His faithfulness in my request to be used by Him to serve in the way He chooses. I am able to use my gifts, I am able to be the witness the Lord has asked me to be, and I am able to serve all because of our generous partners. Together, we can change lives in Haiti.
