ATC Students Learn “Appropriate Technologies”

Our 3-week sustainable agriculture training course is in full swing. At the Agriculture Training Center (ATC) we demonstrate many “appropriate technologies” so that every Haitian family can easily provide for themselves, and that instantly makes life easier, healthier, and safer. Examples are tire gardens – making gardens out of old used tires; drip irrigation – simple systems that conserve precious water resources while delivering irrigation more precisely where it’s needed; solar dehydrators – can dry fruits and vegetables, preserving them for longer use when there isn’t refrigeration.

We also have cooks and housekeeping staff who take care of the students while they live in our bunkhouse. The students at our ATC get pretty tired working so hard every day, so the hot, nutritious meals and clean bunkhouse are surely welcome. They have solar lighting at night and for keeping phones charged. There are indoor showers and sinks with running water. We use improved cooking methods of propane stoves and rocket stoves, so they can have meals faster and more safely. We also have indoor compost toilets! All of these “appropriate technologies” that the students learn about and enjoy are in addition to the gardening curriculum. The 3-week experience at the ATC is truly eye-opening and life-changing. Thank you, Partners, for helping to teach Haitians how to help themselves!
