Caring for the Special Children

A week ago, we posted the sad story of a Haitian mother, Madamn Silien, who had just given birth to a baby girl at our Birthing Center. The baby’s legs were deformed, and at first, she did not even want to hold or touch the baby. (Many Haitian mothers think that deformities come from Voodoo.) Our wonderful midwives (“fanm saj” in Creole) stayed up “all night long with her,” hugging her, praying with her, and encouraging her. The next day, Dieuferly, one of our older boys from our Love A Child Children’s Home, came and told her the story of how he had been born with club feet, and how that God had made a way for him and his surgery, and that God would do the same for her baby.

We encouraged her to go the Adventist Hospital but because that was so far away, she took her baby to St. Vincent’s Hospital, a wonderful hospital for handicapped children. They cast her baby’s legs, and she must bring the baby back each week. (Love A Child will pay for her transportation and any other expenses for this.)

This woman might have given up on her baby if she had been born in a place where no one cared… Our Birthing Center is “Christ-centered” and we “really care!” Thank you, wonderful partners!!! Sherry
