Dorissant… Waiting for Pizza

Dorissant’s problem in life was like many, many other children. His mother died and his father abandoned him. When the neighbors found him “wandering around” the family’s hut, with no one to take care of him, they brought him to us. He has no one, no family except Love A Child.

Dorissant Gabriel is now 12 and tall for his age. (In fact, we can’t keep him in long pants or shoes!!) His desire is to be a mechanic. He is in 6th grade now, but will soon be out for the summer. He is a very obedient young man, never talks back, and never is afraid of work. He is up at 4:30 a.m., watering the flowers and plants, sweeping, dusting, disinfecting things, and is always ready to help! Today, I’m doing a “bifet inspection.” A bifet is a closet. Their rooms always look “fairly good” until I open their little closet. So, he may be busy tomorrow.

Dorissant loves to play soccer! He loves to “catch” balls. He is a fairly quiet kid and will do anything that is asked. Even with all the problems in Haiti, the gangs on the streets, the insecurity, and the many other problems, it is easier raising children in Haiti, if we keep them off the streets. They do not have the temptation for drugs. They all want to make money and save it, and they are obedient.

Dorissant and all our kids are waiting for one thing… the new “Pizza Restaurant” to open in Gwo Maché Mirak, near us!! Dorissant and all the kids, love pizza and it’s been a while since they had any.

Waiting for Food…

Early this morning, gangs shot and killed two people from Miracle Village. The third man, they believe he was a Pastor, was shot and treated at our Jesus Healing Center, and had to be sent via our ambulance to a hospital for surgery. We pray that he lives.

If any of you know where “Best Fun” is, less than a mile from us, there were lots of gang members in this area… early this morning. Everyone is on alert.

Our food container, driven by our driver Casimi, has not shown up yet, due to the problems. Meanwhile, little children like this little one in this photo, are “waiting for food.” We usually share food with “some missionaries” who are on “this side” of the gangs, but right now, we don’t have the food to share or to pass on to little ones like this little girl…

We “never thought” the gangs would venture this close to Love A Child. Any time you think of us, say a prayer that the Lord will command a company of Angels all around us. When I first got saved, we used to sing a song that said, “Jesus, build a fence all around us every day…” I find myself singing that song again. Please pray for us, our workers, and our Love A Child children… and our food container driver Casimi. Thank you, and God bless you for standing with us in times like these.

Love,
Sherry

The Living Word of God

We often share items we receive with the mothers who come to our Birthing Center and the men and women who come to our Jesus Healing Center. The greatest gift we can give is the Bible in their Creole language.

These are New Testament Bibles. These Bibles were sponsored by one of our partners, and the Bibles are like “gold” to the Haitian people. Many of them will “sleep with the Bible under their pillow” or under “whatever they use for a pillow.”

Haiti’s people are living in a time of great distress… Just up the road from us a little way, this morning, at about 5:00 am, the gang attacked some people and shot a Haitian Pastor and put a bullet in him. He was taken to our Clinic but had to be transferred by our ambulance to a surgery hospital. If ever there was a time that we needed the Word of God for Haiti, it’s now!

Thank you to our precious donor who donated these Bibles! We don’t have any guns. The Word of God has to be “our defense,” and the Word of God brings us encouragement in these times of trouble. God bless you, partners, for sponsoring these New Testament Bibles in Creole!!

WHO LENDETH UNTO THE LORD?

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Proverbs 19: 17

This is a powerful verse from the word of God. When we give unto the poor, we are lending unto the Lord. The Bible says that when you and I have given unto the poor, the Lord will pay us again! The Lord pays better dividends or interest than the bank does!!

Update on Joseph

Joseph… It is not uncommon for a father in Haiti to abandon his children when his wife dies. It happens all the time. Who will go to the market to sell? Who will wash the clothes at the river? Such was the case with Joseph (and his sister, Sarah).

When Joseph’s mother, Elicia Felix died, his father abandoned both children who had Kwashiorkor Malnutrition. The doctor thought they would not live. They were brought to our orphanage. Joseph is in Canado College to study to be a mechanic. When he’s not in school, he’s on the painting team. Joseph is sweet and quiet and respectful. We hope and pray he will make a good mechanic!

Joshua and Kenzy’s Graduation!!

If a Haitian parent is fortunate enough to have their child go to school, it’s a miracle. Most children don’t have the opportunity to go to school.

Here at Love A Child, we want the children to love, serve God, and have an education. You are looking at the “future of Haiti.” Joshua, left, was found in the weeds near our gate. Kenzy’s mother died during childbirth in the mountains and his father brought him to us.

Both will go to first grade in the fall. Graduations are a big thing because all the parents come, and all the ladies like to dress up! It was a good time to get away from the gangs in the street, and the stress they cause.

All the children had a part to play… poems in French and dances. We helped contribute to the graduation. Little Kenzy did his best because he was not feeling well… but everyone had a great time! Lots of people there and lots of laughter. It was a good break from the day-to-day stress of the gangs.

Let’s see what these two cuties will grow up to be! Thank you, partners, for changing lives!

“Better Than a GPS.”

We used to have a friend who frequently traveled to Haiti with us. She has now gone to be with the Lord. She was a good person, and loved the Lord, but she drove us nuts! She said she would have to wait until the Lord told us if she could go to Haiti… This would mean that she would wait until we were at the ticket counter and then she would purchase her ticket. She could never make a decision. She was always afraid she would get “off track.”

We all get “off track” once in a while, but that is why we have a big God! I can get lost in a paper bag! I have no sense of direction, so I count on my GPS. Even if I mess up and forget to turn, it will bring me “back on course.” That’s what the Lord does. The Spirit of the Lord is always there to guide us… “The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not ‘want’ (be in need of anything). He maketh me to lie down in ‘green pastures:’ He leadeth me beside the ‘still waters.’ He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3

God will always help you “make those decisions.” He will help you get “right back on track,” and keep you there. He is better than any “GPS!” I love Him! He has a full-time job keeping “Sherry on track!” That’s why I love Him so much!

God is Good to Yonel

Yonel…  He was nothing but a skeleton when we found him in the mountains, during a Mobile Clinic. He was skin and bones. Both he and his small sister were brought by their grandmother to our clinic.

We knew his sister was near death, but we thought we had a chance of bringing Yonel back to life. That day, en route down the mountains, he was so hungry, that he ate nine mangos before we got home. God was good to Yonel. He had Marasmus Malnutrition which is not as dangerous as Kwashiorkor. After about a year, he began to heal.

For a while, he was on our “painting team,” until he got married! He has been married to a sweet young lady for a little over a year or more, and they have moved to the Dominican Republic. Yonel is sweet, kind, and loves the Lord, and we are so proud of him, Sherry

Update on Jackson

Dear friends, this is an updated report on Jackson beginning his dialysis in the apartment we rented in the Dominican Republic. With Jesse are Jovanie, RN, one of our Love A Child kids, Phanise, our RN who works at the Jesus Healing Center, Philemond our driver, and the trainer, doctors, and nurses who came by to check on things. Bobby and Sherry

“Jackson had a full week, this week, with all of the training, tests, imaging, and doctor visits. Everything is going really well. His incisions are healing up nicely. I was actually surprised by how small the scars are. The doctors are happy with the progress.

We had imaging taken on Friday in order for the surgeons to make sure that everything was placed correctly inside his abdomen. We will know the results on Monday. He also has a follow-up appointment with the lead doctor on Monday, just to make sure everything is going well.

Jackson has started dialysis but in a very limited capacity. The dialysis team is training our nurses on how to do the peritoneal dialysis manually. This first phase of training involves Jackson undergoing dialysis, but manual peritoneal dialysis. It is done without the use of a machine. The process involves plastic bags full of special fluid, almost like IV bags hanging above his head, but instead of going into a vein, they feed a tube that goes directly into his abdomen. The fluids are gravity-fed into his body and then it gets drained out after a while to a different bag below him. What comes out is pretty interesting. In my opinion, dialysis is effective, but I’m not a doctor. The liquids that are removed from his body through the process definitely contain toxins!

Our nurses are doing very well in the training. They are very professional and are taking great care of Jackson in the process. Next week’s schedule will probably be more of the same. There are only three doctor visits scheduled so far, but training and dialysis will take place daily.

When I left the apartment this morning to head toward the airport, the girls were prepping the place for training. They have a daily regime that they go through. They sterilize the room and prep everything for dialysis. By the time they get back to Haiti, the process should be like a well-oiled machine.

But the end goal is that Jackson learns to do everything for himself. He is learning the process, but it is a lot to digest right now. I have confidence in him that he will be able to do this and the near future without assistance. Much like brushing his teeth or taking a shower, this will become part of his daily routine.

Jackson, health-wise, is doing very well. The doctors are happy with everything so far. He is beginning to become more active. He walks daily and goes up and down the stairs at the apartment. He is learning to adjust to his new appendage. But that will take some time. He basically has a tube coming out of his upper abdomen. I bought him a special harness for it that he wears around his midsection almost like a cumber bun. This helps keep it out of the way when he is active.

Thank you for everyone’s support and patience. God is good and always faithful. I know Jackson has a bright future because of all of the effort, time, and money that has been poured into his young life. God bless, Jesse”
