Richard, Musician and Accountant

We just love Richard so much! So many of you may know his story, and some may not, but Richard came to us right after the earthquake. He was raised in an orphanage for people with disabilities, which was demolished during the first wave of the earthquake.

Later they found homes for all the children, except Richard (pronounced Ree- char) He is disabled and drags his legs when he tries to walk. One of our partners sent him a “ three-wheeled bike,” which gave him independence! After graduating from high school in Haiti, he decided he wanted to go to college but, he would have to ride a tap-tap (public transportation in Haiti). He wants to study economics and accounting.

We were extremely worried because those waiting for a ride are aggressive! We knew Richard would never be able to get on a tap-tap by himself. Finally, we discovered that Universite Providence, about four miles from us, is handicap accessible. Our driver takes Richard on Monday, and he can stay until Friday and come home for the weekend. Richard plays for our church services and our Children’s Home! He has some type of “musical system” that his laptop is connected to, which makes his music even better (these kids are smart! This is way beyond me!!)

Being disabled in Haiti usually means “no future for you!” But, just look at Richard…always smiling, always laughing, always sweet! He knew all along “that God had a better plan for him!”

We all love Richard so much!
