We are honored to be partnering with the University of Florida who has a tremendous burden to help the people of Haiti and have been doing so for several years. They were the ones who did the research on the terrible cholera outbreak in Haiti and discovered its origin. They also discovered the Zika virus in Haiti and are still doing research on it.
As we told you earlier, we are preparing for them to move into the former Malnutrition/Triage Building. Everyone has been working so hard, including Fred, Edsel, our Haitian workers, and Mark Ostrander, preparing and remodeling for the new Lab building. We felt “led of the Lord” to let them use the building, which we really needed ourselves. But in return, look what the Lord has done through Joyce Meyer Ministries – Hand of Hope, in sponsoring the building of our brand-new Malnutrition Center. Now, with this new building, the mothers can actually stay with their babies until they are strong enough to leave.
Enclosed below is a note from Dr. Glenn Morris, from the University of Florida. We have met so many doctors and scientists from the University of Florida who are Christians and really love the Haitian people. We are truly amazed at their dedication.
Bobby and Sherry Burnette
“The University of Florida (UF; we’re the Gators) has been engaged in work in Haiti for many years, using sophisticated science to better understand the diseases present in Haiti, and how these diseases are transmitted. During the past decade, we have done a great deal of work with cholera, trying to understand this ancient deadly disease that spread in epidemic form in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. We have also focused on diseases transmitted by mosquitos – malaria, zika, dengue, chikungunya, and a series of new “emerging” mosquito-borne viruses that we have discovered in Haiti for the first time.
We are very excited about the opportunity to work with Bobby and Love a Child, and to see how we can apply the scientific knowledge that we have gained in Haiti to help and heal the Haitian people. By having our medical laboratory next to the Clinic and Birthing Center at Love a Child, we can get a better understanding of the diseases that are occurring in this part of Haiti, and help guide public health interventions and the treatment being given by the physicians in the Love a Child clinic. We also anticipate that we will have medical and public health students coming from UF to help with our projects, and assist with the work being done by Love a Child. It is an exciting partnership, and we look forward to this opportunity to work together, to explore new ways by which we can help the people of Haiti.
