Up Before Dawn with a Smile

The young boy you see in the picture watering the plants in our Children’s Home courtyard is Christian. This picture was taken “early in the morning.” The tall man beside Christian is “Camey,” he is over the boys, and he is also the guy with the “megaphone” getting everyone up at 4:30 am to start the day! (Camey believes in God, hard work, discipline, and dancing!! Ha!)

Christian is 14 and in Junior High. His story is sad, but it has a happy ending. His mother died when he was a toddler, and his father was put in prison (we don’t know why.) He was brought to us by the Department of Social Services here in Haiti.

Christian is small for his age, but his smile is bigger than he is! We first realized his talent for music when he was about six. We had a large outdoor service in our “Grand Miracle Market here in Haiti,” Christian was one of the singers, and he stepped up to the platform, un-afraid and sang with all his heart and sang “professionally!”

That night, I had tears in my eyes as I thought about his father in prison, “if only he could have seen his small son, singing for the Lord!” It was amazing! He is now learning to play the “keyboard” and still sings!! Christian is very kind and obedient; he is good at school, loves music, and loves to work! What more could you ask for? “Imagine any teenager having to get up that early and still have a smile on his face!” Rare.
