Update on Poul Mirak

Update on Poul Mirak: 8-28-17 9:00 AM

Bobby sent this note from Rad Hazelip, who was in Haiti last week checking on many of our ongoing projects:

Last week I was in Haiti checking on some of our Sustainability projects… “Haitians learning to help themselves.”

Both the Agricultural Training Center and Poul Mirak, the chicken co-op, are doing more and better than we expected. The Haitians involved with these programs are very happy that they have meaningful jobs and they recognize the importance of what they are doing for their whole community. The chicken co-op is really doing well and I’m so proud of the men and what they have learned. They have been good “chicken farmers” for some time now, with their production numbers and results meeting or exceeding the averages for Haiti. Their birds are big, plump, clean and content and buyers favor Poul Mirak birds over others.

But beyond being just good “chicken farmers” now, the men are really excelling at managing their “business.” They are more efficient at managing their cash flow and they are coming up with really good ideas for marketing and merchandising. This is increasing their average price sold, thus increasing their profit. In fact, they have now been able to hire two ladies from Miracle Village to help them at the farm. They told me that others in the community are now thanking them for being there, for providing good chickens and for bringing prosperity to the community. These five co-op members have stepped up and are learning more and more about being good businessmen.

Without the courage and foresight of Mike Welch and the International Poultry Foundation, this unique co-op model would not have given these men the opportunity to rise to this level of success. Their lives are dramatically changed. When I asked them why they thought their life is so good now, without hesitation they all raised their hands to the sky and cried “Bondye” (God in Creole). They give God the glory and are very thankful for Mike Welch, Bobby and Sherry and the Love A Child partners. Meet our Poul Mirak members.
