A New School and Church for the People of Greffin

May 14-30, 2015

“For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.” – Ecclesiastes 7:12

In Haiti education is not free. Most poor parents cannot afford to pay for school, let alone books, or uniforms. A Christian education costs money.

A school teacher must pass a qualification test from the National Department of Education in Haiti. The majority of all school teachers come from the larger cities where there is higher education. Therefore, the school teachers must pay for local “tap tap” rides, and then, they must “walk up high mountains to get to the schools.” They must sleep at the school from Monday through Thursday night, and then on Friday afternoon, they walk down from the mountain and catch a tap tap home for the weekend.

The village of Greffin, Haiti is located high in the mountains where we had built a Love A Child Church and School many years ago.

However, the earthquake, hurricanes and storms did enormous damage to the dilapidated school and it needed to be completely rebuilt.

The cost of construction in the mountains is much more expensive because of transporting the materials from the city to one of the highest mountains where the school and church are located.

There are hundreds of children in this mountain community and all of them depend on our Love A Child School. Not only was the building being eaten away, but the mountain where the school was located was also being eaten away. For the time being, we had to move the school children under a shed near the school building.

This was a huge problem to rebuild a large, new durable school in the “middle of nowhere” in the deepest mountains of Haiti, near a mountain that was falling apart. Could it be done and how could we ever afford the money to do it? It would take a “miracle.”

We hired a professional Haitian Construction Crew that was used to working in the high mountains. These guys “walked the dog!” They had to “cut away” a large part of the mountain and build a huge retaining wall. Just building the wall would have been a feat, but in addition, building this huge school was another feat!

We want to thank our wonderful friend and partner, Dor’e Aslandes, for sponsoring this project! She certainly had to be touched by God to sponsor this huge project!

Secondly, we want to thank our dear friend, Mark Ostrander, who has been working in Haiti with us for the last 23 years! He is the “construction brain,” and “genius” at building things and doing the job right! Thank you Mark for all of your hard work and we also thank his wife Evie for sharing Mark with the poor of Haiti.

The mountain children look forward to coming to our school not only for learning, but because they will find hot nourishing meals to eat each day!

When they take spoons home and forget to bring them back, no problem, they will eat with their fingers. (Besides, God invented fingers before spoons.)

Many people stopped to watch the progress on the building.

Now, hundreds of poor children will receive a Christian education with a hot meal, through our Child Sponsorship Program! God is good!

We will be feeding 7,000 children in our Love A Child Schools this coming year. These children come from far in the mountains, and some walk three to four hours each way without food. If they do not have this meal at school, they will walk three to four hours back without food. Our Child Sponsorship Program saves lives.

Child Sponsorship does make a difference! There are many children who are waiting for a sponsor so that they too can attend school. Pray about “sponsoring” a child and changing a life.

For most children in Haiti, this is only a dream because the cost of attending school including uniforms, books, and other necessities is unattainable for many Haitian families.

The total cost of an education is so high that most parents prefer their children stay home and work in the garden. You can make a dream come true for a poor child who needs a sponsor.

Please pray about changing one or two lives. One of these changed lives will be yours because you will know the joy of sponsoring a child!

Several hundred children now attend the new Greffin School, located very deep in the mountains of Haiti.

All these children come from poor homes here in the Greffin area of Haiti, but they have found wonderful sponsors who make a difference in their lives!

Now, they are in school, learning, eating, singing, and most of all, receiving a sponsor’s love.
