Child Sponsorship is one of the greatest blessings in the world. Each day, hundreds of poor Haitian children leave their mud huts, and their “empty bowls” to walk across the mountains to a beautiful Christian school! They have hot meals, a Christian education, medical check ups, and most of all these children have sponsors who “really love them.” These children will someday “change lives.”

 

For so many of the children who live in the mountains of Haiti, their lives are a struggle each day as they try to help find food for their families. Every hour of every day is spent doing one thing, “looking for food” or “looking for something to sell to have food for that day.” There is no soccer and no baseball games to play, and they aren’t able to go to school. There is NOTHING, but hunger each day. This will continue unless someone can make a difference in their lives.

 

Education and food work together for children living in Third World countries such as Haiti. Feeding them is a blessing, but feeding them with an education is the key. A Creole Proverb says, “Sak vid pa kanp.” which translates to “An empty sack cannot stand,” meaning: “You can’t get much work done on an empty stomach.”

 

Many children from the mountains of Haiti do not usually get food during school time. They leave their mud huts early in the morning having maybe a half a cup of coffee with sugar. They then travel several hours to school, sit there all day, often falling asleep about 10:00 AM. They are then expected to walk back up the mountains when they are finished with classes. At all 16 Love A Child schools, the children receive a hot nutritious meal each day.

 

We focus on giving these school children a sound Christian education and they are able to learn because they have full “bellies.” This can only happen through Child Sponsorship.

 

When we find sponsors like you, we are able to get these children out of a mud hut and into a beautiful Christian School with books, food, laughter, stories of Jesus and much more.

 

We now have 16 schools and over 7,000 children attending each week. There is a director for each school and more than 240 teachers and staff. All of our teachers and staff are certified through L’Education Nationale et de la Formation Professionelle Haiti and meet very high standards.

 

Education is “priceless” to these children of the poor. An education is not ”free” in Haiti. Parents must be able to purchase uniforms, shoes, backpacks and books for their children to attend school. For most Haitians, it is a choice between “food” and “school.” This young girl can only pray that she will get a sponsor, so that someday she too can go to school.

 

The majority of Haiti’s children work long, hard hours gathering and carrying wood or water, and working in dry, rocky gardens. They have “dreams” of going to school, but they are only dreams unless someone sponsors them to go to school. It is so very, very sad to see these children work all day on empty stomachs while they hear the sounds of laughter from school children, or smell the food cooking and cannot eat it.
