Word from the Mission Field

“Ye Shall Henceforth Return No More That Way.” Deuteronomy 17:16

Are you looking for a “Word from the Lord,” today? Perhaps you are wondering “which way to go?” Maybe it is something you have been thinking about…

This is a very unusual scripture and it is dealing with the bondage of the Israelites in Egypt… for 400 years they had been slaves. We can only imagine their treatment and persecution. God had spoken to Abram (Abraham), in Genesis 15:13 saying that “his seed would be in bondage to Egypt for 400 years and that the Egyptians would afflict them.”

Now, they left Egypt and are reaching the “promised land!” Moses is warning the people before he gets ready to die. He is telling them how to keep God’s law, to obey His Word, etc. Then he says, “Ye shall henceforth return no more that way” (Egypt). It is amazing to see that once God brought His people “out of Egypt,” how many times they murmured and complained and “wanted to return to Egyptian bondage!”

It is the same way today… Someone prays for God to deliver them from their job, from an abusive marriage, from a situation, from a place that they have lived, etc. Then, like “Lot’s wife,” when things don’t go “exactly as planned,” they want to turn around and get one more last “look.” They are saying, “I want to return to Egypt.” But God is saying, “Ye Shall Henceforth Return No More That Way!”

God doesn’t want you to “look back,” or “think back,” or “go back!” Apostle Paul said, “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press towards the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13

Bobby always says, “Stop looking back in your rearview mirror. Keep your eyes on the road ahead!” Today, this scripture is for “you!” Sherry

“Moomoon” is a Sweetie!

Bianca is one of the sweetest young girls we have! She is quiet, intelligent, and “always studying!” She is in High School and preparing to graduate and go on to College. She loves to do research on difficult things… alone. She will spend all day in her room, reading, and be content with that. She speaks French fluently, Creole of course, and also Spanish. (French is required in colleges in Haiti.) When Bianca is bored, she finds work ironing, cooking, or cleaning. She loves to dance, but her voice is her talent. We have only heard her sing a solo “one time,” and everyone stood on their feet… but she is shy and that is why she doesn’t sing specials in Church.

Her aunt brought her and her siblings to us a long time ago… she said their parents tried to escape to the States on a boat and drowned. So, we have no way of knowing if this is true or not. Bianca loves the Lord and wants to be a doctor, but really a surgeon! Bianca has the biggest eyes I have ever seen… in fact sometimes the kids call her “krapo,” or frog! We love our little “frog!”

Thank You World Vision!

What a tremendous blessing we received from our friends at World Vision! We are so thankful for the “pallets of rolls of material” that we were recently given. We shared many of these rolls of materials with other missionaries, and some went to Pastor Claude, who was “beside himself” with joy!!! He can really use this material at his big orphanage!

The young man in the sweatshirt is our own Jean Edwouard. He has been with us since the age of six. He was a restavek slave child. He is finishing up his last year at school and then will go into the “sewing business” full time. Right now, he and his partner still do a lot of sewing! This material will create “jobs” for the people of Haiti and their families! We want to thank World Vision for all the medicines, materials, shade cloths, and everything else they have sent! Special thanks to all of our partners, who love the poor.

A Sick Mother, Son, a Blind Father, and a Four-Year-Old Boy…

This is probably one of the saddest stories I have seen in Haiti…

You will see pictures of Luckson’s mother, and how sick she is. I do not have a picture of 4-year Luckson, her son… But this is the true story from “Boulay,” Haiti, a village in the middle of nowhere.

Madamn Arismene (pictured) is a poor mother with three children, and of them is 4-year-old Luckson. Madamn Arismene’s husband went blind about 4 years ago and the family was evicted from their home because her husband could no longer work. They moved into a shack by the river, but it is in the middle of “nowhere.” There is no clean water, no trees, nothing… It is a desert.

Madamn Arismene had been sick for a long time, but even though she was sick, she tried to gather pieces of wood to sell… Her children were nearly starving to death. Little Luckson, age 4, decided to “lead his blind father down by the riverbed each day, to sit and crush rocks from the river.” Luckson made sure they were put in a pile… and Little Luckson also sat and crushed rocks by his blind father… no water to drink all day and no food and a sick mother to go home to.

When his mother cannot get out of bed, Luckson goes and fetches wild leaves to boil and makes a “tea” for her. What a brave little boy! When we heard of this family, we took food to them and took Madamn Arismene to our clinic. She was treated and given medicine, but she will be sent to another doctor, a heart specialist.

I told you this story about Luckson because even though I don’t have a picture of him, you already have a picture of a little boy leading his blind father to the river each day, helping him crush rocks and then searching for wild leaves to make his mother a tea when she is sick.

These are children and people that we cannot “shut our eyes” from.

“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Galatians 5:14

Just think, all the law is fulfilled in this…“love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.” Wow! That’s a lot of love. Try it today! Do something kind for someone you don’t even know and see how blessed you are.

Mackenson… a Miracle from God!

When I first saw this poor father from the mountains coming to our Mobile Clinic, he had a baby in his arms. This child had malnutrition so badly, that his arms and legs were swollen so badly that the skin was ripping open. The child looked like he was about a year and a half or two, but I was shocked when the father said he was “seven!” It couldn’t be! But, that was what I was told and indeed, this little boy had suffered many years of severe malnutrition, and his Birth Certificate said that he was seven!

We took him and brought him from far in the mountains to our Children’s Home. Mackenson was so bad off that he was in the hospital for a long time. After a while, he was much better, and we sent him to school. When he was in about the fourth grade, he had a stroke and was thrown on the floor.

Since that day, he has been crippled in his hand and arm and he walks with a limp. He is quite intelligent, though. He is now in Junior High and making good grades. His love is the Bible and he wants to be a teacher, and he especially likes geography! He will go far in his life!

324 Fed in Petite Rivier

Thank you for your financial support and prayers! We had a big cookout for 324 children in South Haiti in an area called Petite Rivier. The children came dressed in their best for the feast. Yum!!! Thank you, Hubert, and all his team for putting this together. We love you… I know this was the last of our rice, beans, and cooking oil. By faith, this week we will be wiring money to purchase more food in South Haiti for the children. Today Hubert is dealing with the pricing at the port in South Haiti. Thank you, with your help, we are building Gabion houses and giving food to the many who have lost their houses due to the earthquake. We are doing this together… Love is something you do!

Sherry and I landed early this morning from the Dominican Republic, en route to Ft. Myers, Florida, for a Board Meeting this week.

We have been with little Jasson (who will soon be going through dialysis in the Dominican Republic), along with Philemond, our driver, Jesse Ostrander, and Jovanie (who will be learning how to do the Dialysis when we bring Jasson home from the DR).

We will be returning to Haiti after our Board Meeting this week. Thank you so much, for your love, your prayers, and your support.

Love, is Something You Do…

“If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” James 2:16

We have been living and working in Haiti for over thirty years. I am sure that there are times we missed God in some small act of kindness we could have done. All of us have at one time or another closed our eyes, or our ears, to a real need. Our prayer every day, is that the Lord will open our hearts to always be sensitive to those around us, whether in Haiti, the U. S., or anywhere, and that never again will we overlook a real need no matter how big or small it may be… because “Love, is Something You Do,” as Bobby has always said. Have a blessed day and keep your heart open, Sherry

Update on Rachael

When Rachael’s mother died in childbirth, it left her father with four children to raise, in the very poor country of Haiti. So, we took her in… but we did not really like the name of Nazalie… it just didn’t fit. So, we began to call her Rachael. She has grown into a beautiful little girl, and the kids call her “Zo Kiki.”

Rachael actually has four siblings, but to our knowledge, they have not come to see her at the orphanage. Rachael has had a problem with a bad “head fungus,” which gets in really bad condition. We made up some “homemade” medicine and put it on her and she is doing well.

Rachael loves to do “Praise Dances.” She babysits little Zachary and little Zoey. She loves to help in the kitchen and loves to fold clothes or anything she can do. She is “all girl!” We just keep wondering what she will do with her life when she gets older!!! God has a plan! We all love “Zo Kiki!!!”
