Lomene Strives for More

Today, four of our older children took their exams to finish high school… Joseph, Jonas, Kenson, and Lomene. This is quite the feat for any high school student in Haiti because the test is “very, very difficult.”

We are so proud of Lomene and how far she has come. Of all the children, she would be the least likely to make it this far because she was a “restavek slave child.” We found her when she was washing dishes, washing clothes, cooking for two families, and taking care of small children. She was so tiny and overwhelmed by the workload she was given, but she never complained. But when we are dealt things that are bad in our life, we must put our faith in God and trust Him. That is what she did…

We took Lomene back to our orphanage. Soon, the little girl who had never been to school was in school! And, in a few days, she will find out if she has passed Philo, which is a great accomplishment. It is the same as taking a test in the first year of college in the States!

Her dream is to be the “Chief Cook” in our orphanage! “Lomene, you are not there yet because no one can top “Nini,” but you are a great cook!!!” We love Lomene, and we hope and pray that she passes!!!

Important Updates

Danger: Some of our staff can’t make it here to Love A Child because they have to go through a dangerous area of Croix des Bouquets. They must wait until the streets clear. As you may know, the death of the President has caused a lot of anger among the people. So, our workers must sit tight, wherever they are, until the roadblocks and trouble pass.

Update on Jackson: Jackson still has a fever and infection caused by the fistula (catheter) in his neck. The doctor wants to remove the catheter, clear out the infection, and put in a new catheter. Jackson is our little boy who had kwashiorkor malnutrition. He retained a lot of water. He now has severe kidney problems and will have to have dialysis. We will keep you posted. Thank you for your prayers.

“Backed Into A Corner.”

We’ve all been there in one way or another… with the “dogs on our heels.” There was a great king in the Bible named Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. But one day, the king of Moab and the king of Ammon decided to come against Jehoshaphat and, they were “not a few.” One of King Jehoshaphat’s men said, “there cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea.”

Jehoshaphat had no time to prepare because the enemy were already on the run with the thundering sound of the horse’s hooves! You could say, “he was backed into a corner!” Have you ever been there? Out of money, got laid off from your job, your husband left you with the kids, or, the doctor said, “Come into my office. I want to see you.” None of these things are good. But, when Jehoshaphat was backed into a corner, he set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. All of a sudden, a Levite named Jahaziel began to speak in the name of the Lord… “Be not afraid nor dismayed by the reason of this great multitude; or the battle is not yours… but God’s!” No matter who or what has you “backed into a corner today,” God already has a plan and the “battle is His!” So, don’t give up… don’t give in! Help is coming!

Our Sweet Ericka

More than half of the children here at our “Children’s Home,” came to us because their mother died during or right after birth. Such is the case with our sweet Ericka. When she was brought to us, she had a horrible, horrible skin infection and scratched constantly. It took a while to get this under control… But as she grew we knew she was mentally challenged. We tried putting her in school but she had a tough time. So we took her out and began teaching her how to do chores around the house. But, Ericka begged to go back to school!!! So, we put her back in school. She is so sweet and doesn’t care what kids say to her, she just goes on like life has been good to her!! We are so proud of her determination. She loves to “dress up,” go to church, and sing! She loves helping with the younger children and she is too good with them. We love her so much and we fell blessed that the Lord allowed us to be her parents!

Update on Jackson (Jasson)

This past week has been a week of hospital care for our kids. Dieuferly is recovering from his club-foot surgery and doing well… but Jackson had a setback. Even with the great care of the room mothers here, he developed an infection and high fever with the central catheter in his neck. They watched it for a day, but then, decided to take him to the hospital. They had no room at “Petite Frères et Soeurs,” nor Bernard Mevs hospital, so he is going to Hospital Espoire. Actually, he made six visits back and forth to doctors this past week, and now, they are keeping him until the infection leaves.

It is our heart’s desire (if it would be possible), to get Jackson to the Dominican Republic for a kidney transplant. He has suffered so much already and with the gangs in control, and the dangers, it is far worse for him to continue to get treatment here in Haiti, far more dangerous, and also more expensive. I am not sure if children this age could have a transplant if they found a “fit,” but maybe some of you may have some experience with this. Please remember our children here at Love A Child in your prayers… we have many with major health conditions. Thank you and God bless you so much, Sherry

“The Whirlwind Can Make You Miss the Whisper.”

I have said time and time again, one of the highlights of my life was going to a Kathryn Kuhlman meeting. She was a “different kind” of minister. While some preachers are loud, funny, and boisterous (we love them too), she was quiet and often spoke in a whisper. When ministering to thousands and thousands, she would not let anything distract from the Holy Spirit.

In l Kings 19:11 & 12, God was getting ready to talk to the Prophet Elijah, so the Lord told him, “Go forth and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains (His voice tore the mountains in half down the middle), and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind, an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; And after the fire, a still small voice.”

Never get too busy to listen for the “still small voice.” Sometimes, we are so caught up in the “whirlwind of life,” that we do not stop and “listen with our heart.” Shhh… It is a “still small voice” leading you and showing you what to do. Listen with your heart, and the Lord will show you the best path.

Home Safe!

We are home safe! When we got to the Dominican border side they were closed! They did not know the Haiti border side said they would open today. What do you do? Pray and let the Lord work! The Spanish folks helped us through. When we got to the Haitian side, nobody was in sight. We drove home and all the children were so happy to see us. We were happy to see them!

Dieuferly just sent us a whatsapp to check on us. He said he is feeling good with no pain. PTL! Thank you for all your prayers and comments… so encouraging.

Love is something you do!

Third Set of Twins and Volume Button Number Ten!

We shared about Mika and Mikalange, Daniel and Daniella, and this is David and Davidson (Jonathan). “Whew!” Raising a large family of Haitian children can be rewarding but stressful at times. We have not only the normal teenage things, but also have seven children with major health problems.

David and Davidson Noel almost died when they were born because, as you may know, they nearly died after birth. Their mother died during childbirth. Their father left the twins with “Grandma,” who had no food. She tried to keep the twins alive on “saltwater,” but it closed their throats. When Grandma Noel and her neighbor brought the twins to us, their throats had almost completely closed! It took a long time to get them to be able to drink milk in a bottle!

They were good kids until they hit the teenage “age,” and then, like many, they became lazy. When all the boys were up working, David and Davidson were sleeping… so, they had a “come to Jesus” awakening. I packed up their things and sent them back to the mountains, to the village they came from! They found out that sleeping on a straw mat on a dirt floor was not fun and bugs would eat you. They realized that to take a simple bath, they would have to walk a long way and carry a bucket of water from the river, and much more. When they came back, they did really well for a while. Then, I began having the same problems again… they just wouldn’t get up with the rest of the kids. So, I hired a young tough guy named “Kamy,” and gave him a bullhorn! I told him, “Every morning, at 4:30 a.m. make an announcement on the bullhorn to get up, pray, and let’s get to work!” (Oh yes, I forgot to tell Kamy about that “volume button,” so he had it on number 10, instead of number 2. Ha! No problem getting any kids up in the morning now… the horn goes off 4:30 a.m. and the girls turn up the loud Haitian Christian music!” All the kids are used to it!!

The twins are doing well. They have taken their last test for 12th grade. David is quiet and mature. He wants to be an engineer. Davidson is a little scatter-brained but a good kid!! He loves camerawork and is an expert photographer! Both boys are very respectful, and we love watching them grow up and find their path in life! We love them both!!!! They are now “Zero Stress Kids!”
