Community Profile – The Village of Peyi Pouri – Part 2

“Nèg fè lide-l, Bondye ba-l dwa.”

The man gets the idea, God authorizes it.

We continue our journey into the “regions beyond,” to Peyi Pouri. Learn about the many ways in which Love A Child helps poor Haitians achieve sustainability. You will see how your gifts help us be your “hands and feet” on the mission field.

Peyi Pouri Today

We have seen a lot of changes in the village of Peyi Pouri. About a year ago we were able to bring Creole Bibles to the people here. We want to thank Pastor Gregory Dickow of Life Changers International Church for the Creole Bibles!!! The people were so happy with their new Bibles! They could never afford a Bible “in their lifetime!” We also want to thank our friend David George for sponsoring the new large cross (the original cross was badly damaged in Hurricane Matthew) you see in these pictures! It is solar powered, and it lights up at night so far away that we can see it from our children’s home!!! The people go there every night to pray by the cross!!!

As we work with each community, we try to introduce them to sustainable projects that can improve their living conditions and bring them food for life. We first introduced an “Arborloo” to the people of this village. As part of our Agricultural Extension Sustainability Training project, the village of Peyi Pouri received two “Arborloo” compost toilets for the community. The Walhalla Rotary Club sponsored this community’s sustainable development project, which provided both a rainwater catchment system and these compost toilets. Here we see the Agricultural Training Center (ATC) staff training the people on the use and benefits of composting toilets as a way to improve sanitation and hygiene while providing a great way to grow beneficial trees at the same time.

The idea is to use the “Arborloos” (a relocatable compost “latrine”) over shallow compost toilet pits. The dry material in the tub is how you “flush” a compost toilet – the organic material covers the waste, helping it to decompose into beneficial, safe compost. Composting safely and effectively reduces the human waste into useful products. Once the pit is full, you move the Arborloo to another location and plant a tree in the first location. The trees grow very quickly because they now have their own source of nutrients from the compost! Centuries-old “new” technology! You can see how happy the people are to have this improvement for their village. This project is an example of our “Appropriate Technologies” that is part of the ATC. A modest investment into villages like this makes a huge and beneficial impact on their well-being. A huge thank you to the donors who sponsor these kinds of sustainability projects for our neighbors.

The next Sustainability Project was teaching the people of Peyi Pouri how to grow their own food. We were so proud of Wilner, who is the Director of our Agricultural Training Center. They took their tools of the trade and all their knowledge up into the mountains. Wilner is showing the farmers how they can survive with crops that need little water.

The whole village turned out to learn about planting vetiver grass in terraces on the mountainsides to prevent erosion and provide biomass for use in gardens and compost toilets. They are learning about Tire Gardens, which allows gardens and crops to grow in difficult terrain. They are easy to water with drip irrigation. They use recycled tires that are free and can be used over and over again. It was a beautiful day in “Peyi Beni” because of donor support for these programs. Hundreds of lives will be improved for generations to come. God Bless you for helping our neighbors, and for helping Haitians to help themselves.

Please pray about becoming a sponsor of one of our Sustainability Programs. These programs give Haitians the skills to grow food and feed themselves. Our highest goal is to help the Haitian people become working, viable members of society, and create sustainable improvements in their living conditions. Love A Child is also bringing jobs to the community, which helps the Haitians to help themselves, and it gives the people hope and a brighter future. This is the kind of tremendous impact your gifts of support can have for the people of Peyi Pouri and all of Haiti. Thank you for caring and sharing to help improve so many lives.
